Windows Server 2022: Editions and Features
Windows Server 2022 Standard Edition
The Standard Edition of Windows Server serves as the foundational version. Microsoft designed this to aid organizations or individuals with physical machinery and is suitable for minimal virtualized server environments.
The Standard Edition offers a core-based licensing model, meaning a license of the Standard Edition can only work with two virtual machines and one Hyper-V server.
Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Edition
The Datacenter Edition is ideal for highly virtualized environments such as data centers and the cloud. This edition provides similar features to the Standard Edition with some minor variations.
The significant difference between the Standard and Datacenter editions relates to virtual machine licensing. Datacenter allows an unlimited number of Hyper-V virtual machines or containers.
The Datacenter Edition supports up to 16 cores with additional licensing per additional core. Additionally, all clients accessing the Datacenter Edition also require CALs.
Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Azure Edition
The Azure Edition of Windows Server is a unique Microsoft product, running as an Azure virtual machine or on an Azure Stack HCI cluster. It cannot be installed on bare hardware or run as a Hyper-V virtual machine.
The Azure Edition features Hot Patch, enabling updates to be installed without restarting the server. Server Message Block (SMB) over QUIC provides file access without VPN over the network.
Windows Server 2022 Essential Edition
The Essential Edition is beneficial for small businesses and startups with a maximum of 25 users and 50 devices. This edition doesn’t require CALs for access. However, it’s limited to supporting 10 cores on a single socket and a single virtual machine.
